GPIC signs contract for new facility

ManamaJapanese Company JGC Gulf International is to build a new facility within the Gulf Petrochemical Industries Company (GPIC) to produce Urea Formaldehyde worth $8.8 million.

The entire project would take 18 months and actual production is expected by the third quarter of next year.

The facility is expected to produce 22 metric tons per day of Urea Formaldehyde. The plant will use the latest and environmentally safe technologies designed by Danish Company Haldor Topsoe. 

GPIC President Dr. Abdulrahman Jawahery and JGC Gulf International President Yuji Tanaka signed the agreement for the expansion under the guidance of the Company’s Board of Directors and its Chairman Dr. Ahmed Al Sharyan. Members of the GPIC Executive Management, Labour Union Deputy Chairman and officials of both Companies were present on the occasion.

In a statement, Dr. Jawahery said the project would contribute in securing GPIC’s needs of raw materials and chemicals for manufacturing process.

The plant would manufacture Urea Formaldehyde, a necessary and key component in the production and manufacture of urea granules. GPIC now imports this from other countries.

The new plant would run at low cost to produce the critical raw material needed for urea manufacture. 

Dr. Jawahery also explained that according to the direction of HRH Princess Sabeeka bint Ibrahim Al Khalifa, the Wife of His Majesty the King, President of the Supreme Council for Women to provide women employees opportunities to highlight the Bahraini Women engineers capabilities, GPIC female engineers are included in executing the upcoming project.
