1300 kidney failure cases in Bahrain

ManamaMore than 1300 kidney failure patients have been registered to hospitals in Bahrain, the latest official statistics showed.

According to figures released by Health Ministry, 398 patients are receiving treatment at public institutions, while 936 are being treated at private and military healthcare establishments.

Health Minister Faeqa Al Saleh revealed the statistics in response to the queries submitted by MP Hamad Al Dossary regarding the number of kidney failure patients in the Kingdom and the services provided to them.

The minister said that 171 patients are receiving treatment at Salmaniya Medical Complex (SMC) and 227 at Abdulrahman Kanoo Health Centre for Kidney Diseases in Muharraq Governorate.

“The Artificial Kidney Unit at SMC has 25 beds that provide dialysis service to patients, with a team of 41 nephrologists and nurses. As for Abdulrahman Kanoo Centre, it accommodates around 46 beds and has a team of 76 doctors and nurses,” Al Saleh revealed.

She also stated that the Military Hospital of the Royal Medical Services serves 430 kidney failure patients, six receive treatment at Ibn Al Nafees Hospital and 37 are being treated in Bahrain Specialist Hospital.

The minister also added that haemodialysis annually costs BD23, 000 per patient at public nephrology departments.

More details of the mechanisms of improving services and future projects will be discussed by the minister in the next Parliament weekly meeting on Tuesday.
