Probe underway

ManamaPrime Minister HRH Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa yesterday said that investigation is underway into the armed attack on the Reformation and Rehabilitation Centre at Jau on Sunday, in which a policeman was killed and another injured, allowing several inmates to escape.

The announcement was made during the weekly Cabinet meeting attended by Crown Prince, Deputy Supreme Commander and First Deputy Prime Minister HRH Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa.

Affirming the government’s firm and resolute determination to confront such crimes, the premier said that the perpetrators of the crime would be brought to justice. Affirming Bahrain’s solidarity with Turkey, the Cabinet also condemned the terrorist attack in Istanbul in which several innocent civilians were killed.

HRH the Prime Minister extended deepest thanks and gratitude to His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa for his care and attention throughout the medical check-ups he underwent recently, which, he said, had a good impact on him. 

HRH Prince  Salman congratulated the Prime Minister, on behalf of the Council of Ministers, on leaving the hospital in good health after undergoing successful medical check-ups, praying to Allah, the Almighty, to bless the Premier with abundant health, happiness and long life to continue his dedicated efforts in the service of the nation and its beloved people, Cabinet Secretary General, Dr. Yasser Issa Al Nasser said in a statement following the session, held at the Gudaibiya Palace yesterday. The Premier also extended heartfelt thanks and appreciation to citizens.

Cabinet decisions

  • On energy, the Cabinet session endorsed the National Plan to raise energy efficiency and the National Plan for renewable energy submitted by the Supreme Committee for Natural Resources and Economic Security, chaired by HRH the Crown Prince.

  • The plans included enhancing the use of renewable energy by 5 per cent of the total national energy consumption by 2025, and by 10 per cent by 2035.

  • The Cabinet decided to place the work on the Sustainable Energy Unit among the priorities of government action.

  • The session also approved recommendations submitted by the Supreme Committee and highlighted in the memorandum presented by the Electricity and Water Affairs Minister.

  • The session referred to the Ministerial Committee for Legal Affairs a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between the Ministry of Education and the Council of Higher Education in Turkey on cooperation in the fields of higher education and scientific research, and another MoU signed between the Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs and the Russian Council of Muftis.

  • The Cabinet also approved to hand over the ownership certificates to beneficiaries of housing units and flats in all housing projects as soon as they are endorsed by the government or during the construction process, as proposed by the Council of Representatives.
