Taxi drivers in Juffair are constantly troubled by passengers especially during night, said Faisal Al Abbasi, committee member of Public Transport Drivers’ Society.
Speaking to DT News, he said the passengers, under the influence of alcohol, use foul languages at the taxi drivers whenever their demands were not met.
“There would be abusive words in every second sentence, especially if the passengers are westerners. Such kind of language is totally alien to our culture. But we still bear the humiliation because we don’t want to fight with them,” he said.
He recalled recently being subjected to verbal assault from some westerners for not letting them inside his vehicle, as there were more passengers than what is permitted.
“They used filthy languages and abused me for not allowing them inside my car. I tolerated everything just because I was much older than them and I did not want a fight,” he said.
He did not allow them to board the car as they were seven persons and only six passengers are allowed in his car.
“I have to pay a fine of BD75 if I allow more passengers. I tried to explain it to them politely. But they were drunk and not ready to listen. Without any provocation, they started hurling abuses at me,” he said.
Only last Wednesday, a 60-year-old taxi driver Salman Abdulrahman Abdulla Bu Jiliya was admitted to hospital after being assaulted at Juffair by three Americans, who were allegedly under the influence of alcohol. While two of them fled the scene, police captured the third person.
Faisal Al Abbasi yesterday paid a visit to the house of Salman, who was discharged from the hospital on Saturday. “Though he has recovered, but the attack has left a mark on his eye,” Faisal Al Abbasi said.
Many parliamentarians have already condemned the attack.
