Bahrain and Oman Agriculture Ministers, GCC Officials Visit Mangrove Projects

On the sidelines of the Bahrain International Exhibition (Mara’ee 2025), His Excellency Eng. Wael bin Nasser Al Mubarak, Minister of Municipalities Affairs and Agriculture, accompanied by His Excellency Dr. Saud bin Hamoud bin Ahmed Al Habsi, Minister of Agricultural, Fisheries and Water Resources of the sisterly Sultanate of Oman, and the accompanying delegation, and in the presence of Dr. Mohammed Salman Al Hammadi, UAE Assistant Undersecretary for Food Diversity, conducted a field visit to the mangrove plantation project at GPIC and Peninsula Farms.
During the visit, His Excellency the Minister of Municipalities Affairs and Agriculture affirmed the Kingdom of Bahrain’s keenness to enhance GCC cooperation in environmental sustainability and food security. He highlighted the importance of planting mangrove trees as a priority within a number of national initiatives aimed at supporting national efforts to address climate change challenges, most notably the “Mangroves Bahrain” initiative, which aims to quadruple the number of mangrove trees in the Kingdom of Bahrain by 2035, as part of the Kingdom’s efforts to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060. His Excellency expressed his pride in the successful models provided by Bahraini companies in agricultural and animal production, which represent an important pillar for achieving food security and enhancing joint GCC efforts in this field.
The delegation was received by Eng. Yasser Al Abbasi, CEO of GPIC, where the mangrove plantation project, its implementation mechanisms, and its environmental impact in supporting biodiversity, protecting coastlines, and enhancing vegetation cover were reviewed. The project comes as part of a package of initiatives supporting national efforts to quadruple the number of mangrove trees by 2035 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2026. The company has contributed to planting more than 260,000 mangrove trees in cooperation with the Ministry of Municipalities Affairs and Agriculture up to 2025.
The GCC delegation also visited Peninsula Farms for agricultural production, where they were briefed on agricultural and livestock production lines, the techniques used to improve production and enhance food security, in addition to reviewing several research and development projects implemented by the company in this field.
At the conclusion of the visit, His Excellency Dr. Saud bin Hamoud bin Ahmed Al Habsi, Oman's Minister of Agricultural, Fisheries and Water Resources, expressed his appreciation for the warm reception and the pioneering national projects presented. He praised the Kingdom’s efforts in developing mangrove cultivation and advancing agricultural production systems, affirming that such inspiring experiences reflect the GCC countries’ commitment to achieving food security, preserving the environment, and enhancing prospects for joint Gulf cooperation.
