New Hope in Breast Cancer Surgery

The Royal Medical Services (RMS) has introduced Bahrain's first GEN 3 breast surgery system by Hologic, marking a significant step forward in the Kingdom's breast cancer care through the adoption of advanced surgical technology.

The new system is designed to improve the accuracy and efficiency of breast surgeries by using Magseed technology to precisely locate non-palpable breast lesions before and during surgery. It also incorporates Magtrace, which helps surgeons accurately identify the sentinel lymph node, while providing real-time guidance through audio signals and precise digital readings.

Major General Dr. Shaikh Fahad bin Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa, Commander of the Royal Medical Services, said the introduction of the system reflects RMS's commitment to adopting the latest global advancements in breast surgery and equipping medical teams with innovative technologies that enhance patient care.

He added that investing in modern medical technologies forms a key part of the Royal Medical Services' strategy to improve clinical performance and deliver healthcare services that meet the highest international standards.

Dr. Edward Rowland, Chief Executive Officer of the Bahrain Oncology Center, described the GEN 3 system as a major advancement in breast surgery, noting that it reduces dependence on traditional wire-guided procedures and radioactive materials.

Dr. Noof Alshaibani, Head of the Women's Healthcare Center at the Royal Medical Services and Consultant in General and Reconstructive Surgery at the Bahrain Oncology Center, said the technology provides surgical teams with greater precision and control when treating complex cases, leading to improved surgical planning and better patient outcomes.
