Sentenced ATM fraud implicated in similar case

A Gulf national specialised in swindling gullible Asian labourers has been convicted in another fraud case. He is already serving a combined total of more than 20 years in prison after being found guilty of tricking many Asian men, who sought help to use ATM.

In the recent case, the defendant is said to have conned an Asian man, who was also looking for aid to withdraw money from an ATM in Manama.
The defendant was said to have been standing near the ATM, awaiting a prey.

“I requested him to help me to withdraw money from the ATM as I was using it for the first time. He withdrew the money for me, and gave me the card. But later I got a message on my phone that BD270 was withdrawn from my account,” the victim told prosecutors.

It was found later that the defendant had replaced the victim’s card with another one belonging to a stranger.

“When I went to the bank to enquire about it, they told me that my card had been replaced,” he added.

The defendant’s involvement in the case was revealed after the police reviewed the CCTV cameras installed in the ATM.

The High Criminal Court has handed down three years behind bars to him in this case.
