A company hit by an Iranian strike has had over BD25,000 in rent written off after the damage forced it to stop trading for three months.

The waiver ended a dispute with the landlord outside court. It followed legal talks over the damage to the premises, the loss of use and the halt to the firm’s work.

The owner agreed to cancel three months’ rent after both sides weighed the scale of the damage and the financial harm caused by the closure.

Lawyer Rabab Mahdi said the effects of the Iranian attack went beyond damage to the building. Some firms had been left unable to use rented sites or carry on business as usual.

Such cases, she said, called for contract terms to be reviewed in light of the facts and losses in each dispute.

Ms Mahdi said many rows between businesses could be settled without a court hearing when talks were built on a clear reading of the contract, the evidence and the sums at stake.

A deal can spare both sides the cost, delay and risk of a drawn-out case, she added.

She said lawyers now had a wider part in helping firms weigh legal risk, contain disputes and draw up terms that kept trade links alive.

The settlement, Ms Mahdi said, showed how talks could protect the rights of both sides while allowing a business relationship to survive the strain caused by a regional attack.
