Bahrain to host international meet on women’s rights

Bahrain will host an international conference on women’s rights in April, informed Chairperson of Woman and Child Committee MP Roua Al Hayki here yesterday.

Details like date, time, venue and the names of the distinguished speakers will be announced later. Women leaders specialised in different fields from different parts of the world, especially from the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and other Arab countries will take part in the conference themed “Women’s rights - among international agreements and legislation of local community.”

Speaking to DT News, Roua said that every society and culture has their unique characteristics which separate them from other cultures and societies. “The conference will review and discuss how to create a balance between the women’s rights in terms of international obligations or UN concepts and local Bahraini laws.”

“If you want to apply any of the women’s rights which the UN is promoting, you should be very careful looking into your local laws, community and culture and try to implement it in a way that really needs everybody to collaborate at the same time,” she pointed out.

Roua said that there should be a complete unity of thought before dealing with the international community so that each and every individual might not be going and communicating to the international world with different kinds of languages. “We are inviting the women leaders specialised in different fields so that we can take different opinions about the international obligations and laws.”

She said that the expectations of the people belonging to different cultures were always different. Some people are ready to accept the international concepts completely and some may have their reservations.

“As an MP I have an overview of different men and women considering these rights because at the end of the day it is not related only to the women – it is related to the whole family,” she explained. “When you are empowering a woman, you are empowering a family and the children as well.”

Roua added that the conference would come as the embodiment of its emphasis on the principled claim on women’s rights and fight against all sorts of discrimination against the women in all the fields.
