Bahrain MP Calls For Secure International Waterways
MP Zainab Abdulameer Khalil participated in a meeting of the Bureau of the Standing Committee on United Nations Affairs during Bahrain’s Parliamentary Division delegation’s participation in the 153rd General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in Tanzania.
She said Bahrain’s Parliamentary Division had submitted an emergency item to the General Assembly focused on protecting freedom of navigation, maritime security and international trade through key international waterways, particularly the Strait of Hormuz and Bab Al Mandab.
MP Zainab Abdulameer Khalil noted that the issue extends beyond the regional level, highlighting the role of the United Nations in protecting international peace and security and upholding international law. She also pointed to the importance of maritime trade to global supply chains, energy and food prices, and economies worldwide.
She added that Bahrain’s Parliamentary Division believes the United Nations, in cooperation with national parliaments, has an important role in upholding international law and ensuring that international waterways remain open and secure.
The meeting also reviewed UN mechanisms for conflict prevention and resolution, including the Peacebuilding Commission, partnerships with regional organisations working to promote peace, and the role of special envoys and mediators.
