Money paid as deposits to Muharraq Municipality is still being held, prompting a councillor to demand a full breakdown of who paid it, how much remains and why it has not been returned.
Muharraq Municipal Council member Abdulqader Al Sayed called for details of every outstanding deposit, including the payer, purpose, amount, payment date and related transaction or application number.
He also wants the status of each case and the reason any eligible deposit has not been claimed or refunded.
Acting director-general Mohammed Al Sahli said deposits are collected for permits, applications and related works and remain with the municipality until the work is completed and meets the required standards.
He said money in the deposit account does not necessarily mean it is unclaimed.
“The deposit remains in place until the conditions for its refund have been met,” he said.
Once those conditions are met, depositors can apply for refunds through official online channels, after which the municipality verifies the requirements before making payment.
