No more fuel runs: Relief for Zallaq fishermen

Hasan Barakat

For years, fishermen in Zallaq have had to make long trips just to refuel their boats—a routine that could soon end. A dedicated boat fuel station at Zallaq harbour is nearing completion and is expected to open within days, offering a long-awaited solution for those who rely on the sea for their livelihood.

Southern Municipal Council member Hamad Al Zaabi, representing the Ninth Constituency, said the project is technically complete and awaits final procedures before becoming operational. He described the station as a much-needed addition to marine services along Bahrain’s western coast, serving fishing boats, leisure vessels, and sea-goers.

Until now, fishermen have been forced to travel to distant fuel stations, including Awali, often transporting large quantities of fuel over long distances. Al Zaabi said the new facility will not only reduce costs and save time but also improve safety by limiting the need to transport fuel in unsuitable containers — a practice that can pose serious risks in the event of leaks or accidents.

The project is also expected to boost fishing activity and support marine movement in the western region, addressing a demand fishermen have raised for years.
