9-Year Prison Sentence Upheld for Defendant in Deadly Saar Traffic Crash
Bahrain’s Court of Cassation has upheld the conviction of a defendant responsible for a tragic traffic accident in Saar that killed a husband, wife, and their child, and left two other children seriously injured, rendering the ruling final.
The Head of the Appeals Prosecution stated that the court rejected the defendant’s appeal and affirmed a six-year prison sentence for the traffic offense, along with a one-year suspension of his driving license following the completion of the sentence, and the confiscation of the vehicle.
According to case details, the defendant was driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol, at a speed exceeding the legal limit, and in violation of traffic safety rules. He veered into oncoming traffic, colliding with the victims’ vehicle and causing the fatal crash.
Investigations further revealed that the defendant possessed narcotic substances at his residence for personal use. Following a lawful search, cannabis (hashish) was seized, forming a separate case.
Lower criminal courts had sentenced the defendant to a total of nine years in prison across both cases, in addition to a fine of BHD 3,000, suspension of his driving license, and confiscation of the vehicle and narcotics. The appellate court upheld these rulings.
While the defendant accepted the sentence related to drug possession, he challenged the traffic conviction before the Court of Cassation, which ultimately dismissed the appeal and upheld the lower court’s judgment, bringing the case to a close with a final verdict.
