For many families in Bahrain, the Eid Al Fitr holiday has long been associated with travel. It is a time when suitcases are packed, airport halls grow crowded, and families set off to spend the festive break abroad. For years, travelling during Eid has become a tradition for a large number of Bahrainis seeking a change of scenery after the holy month of Ramadan.
A survey conducted by The Daily Tribune, with assistance from several travel agencies, shows that some destinations consistently rank among the most popular choices for Bahraini travellers during the Eid holiday. Turkey, the United Kingdom, Thailand, Egypt and Georgia often top the list, attracting visitors with their cooler weather, cultural attractions and family friendly experiences.
This year, however, the situation is different.
With the ongoing regional tensions and the closure of Bahrain International Airport, travel agencies say the usual holiday rush has slowed significantly. Several travel offices told The Daily Tribune that even if the airport reopens and flights resume, demand may remain limited, as many travellers fear the possibility of sudden closures or disruptions at the last moment.
Instead, alternative travel plans are beginning to emerge.
Some travel agencies revealed that they are preparing to organise overland trips to neighbouring countries such as Saudi Arabia, Iraq and Kuwait, with a reasonable level of interest already being observed among travellers.
During interviews conducted by The Daily Tribune with a number of residents, many said they plan to remain in Bahrain this Eid and celebrate the holiday close to family and community. Others shared that they are considering travelling by road to the holy city of Madinah in Saudi Arabia or to Karbalaa in Iraq.
In a year marked by uncertainty, it appears that for many Bahrainis the meaning of Eid travel is quietly changing, shifting from distant destinations to journeys that remain closer to home and heart.
