Two proposals reflecting the cultural and community identity of neighbourhoods in the Northern Governorate moved forward during the latest session of the Northern Municipal Council, focusing on both heritage recognition and support for places of worship.

Councillors approved a recommendation to name Street 1018 in Hamala after Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib, honouring one of the most respected figures in Islamic history.

Members said the initiative aims to preserve the Islamic and cultural identity of local communities while recognising historical figures whose legacy continues to shape the values and traditions of society.

For many residents, street names are more than simple directions on a map. They often reflect the history and collective memory of a place, linking everyday spaces to cultural heritage and shared identity.

In the same session, councillors also approved a proposal to register the land of Abdulrahman bin Auf Mosque in Hamad Town under the Sunni Endowments Directorate.

The mosque has existed on the site for many years but the land itself is not formally registered under the endowment authority. Registering the property would help facilitate future renovation and expansion works while ensuring the legal status of the mosque is properly documented.

For people  in the surrounding neighbourhoods, the mosque serves as a daily gathering point for prayers and community interaction.

Councillors said securing the land's legal status would make it easier to maintain and develop the mosque in the future, ensuring that it continues to serve residents and worshippers for years to come.
