8 Israeli Strikes Hit Syrian Air Base; US Calls It ‘Unnecessary Escalation’

Washington: US special envoy for Syria Tom Barrack has criticised eight Israeli airstrikes on a military air base in northwestern Syria, calling them an 'unnecessary escalation' that does not help regional stability.

Barrack said Washington was deeply concerned by the strikes and urged Israel and Syria to favour dialogue over further military action.

He said Syria’s interim government under President Ahmad al-Sharaa has not adopted an aggressive stance or maintained proxy forces, and has repeatedly shown a preference for de-escalation with Israel.

The strikes hit the runway at Abu Duhur air base in Idlib early Tuesday, causing material damage but no casualties, according to Syrian state television.

The US has said it will continue supporting diplomatic efforts between Israel and Syria to prevent further escalation.

The strikes come amid growing tensions between Israel and Turkey over Syria following the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s government in December 2024. Israel has carried out hundreds of strikes on Syrian military targets since then, largely to prevent weapons and military equipment from reaching the new authorities.

Syria’s new government has said it does not want a conflict with Israel, while Israel remains wary of the former Islamist insurgents now leading the country.
