Oakland: US prosecutors have accused Meta of purposefully creating Facebook and Instagram to keep children and teenagers addicted while misleading parents and the public about the platforms' safety.

The charges came as a landmark federal trial involving 29 states opened in Oakland, California. Prosecutors believe Meta used features like limitless scrolling and notifications to increase young users' engagement and earnings, despite understanding the risks.

Meta has denied the charges, stating that it has made significant investments in protecting minors and that the states' assertions have not been proven. The trial is expected to continue several weeks and might result in significant financial penalties and changes to how Meta operates its platforms.
