A dedicated Bahrain Television time slot for revision and tutoring lessons for public school students across all year groups will be debated by Parliament on Tuesday, under a proposal submitted by MP Dr Maryam Al Dhaen.

Dr Al Dhaen is asking the Government to allocate a regular period on one of Bahrain Television’s channels to air support lessons in a range of subjects, covering students from primary level through to secondary school. She said many countries run similar programmes on their state channels, and argued that the approach can ease the cost pressure on parents while helping students.

The Ministry of Education told Parliament that the aims of the proposal are already being met through digital services. It pointed to the eduNET educational portal and Microsoft Teams, saying both help students follow lessons, deepen understanding and improve academic results, while giving teachers tools to track progress and provide support.

The ministry said students can use these services from anywhere and at times that suit them, adding that this helps support equal access for students across all stages of schooling and reduces gaps in attainment.

It also said recorded lessons are available through the ministry’s YouTube channels. But it argued that relying on television broadcasts was mainly suited to the exceptional circumstances of the Covid-19 pandemic and distance learning, adding that televised lessons are not interactive and do not suit lower-performing students who need extra interactive support.

The ministry said it also runs tutoring lessons for targeted students during the school day under organised arrangements to address weak points in subjects and strengthen key concepts and skills.

Parliament’s Services Committee recommended approval of the proposal, citing public-interest grounds including easing the financial burden on parents and following examples used in other countries.
