40+ nations meet to address rising maritime tensions in Hormuz

Ambassador Shaikh Abdulla bin Ali Al Khalifa, Director General of Bilateral Relations at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Bahrain, took part in a ministerial meeting held via videoconference at the invitation of UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper, with the participation of more than 40 countries to discuss developments concerning the Strait of Hormuz.
The meeting reviewed the latest regional developments amid ongoing Iranian attacks on several countries in the region, continued hostilities, and rising risks threatening international navigation through the strategic waterway. Participants highlighted the Strait of Hormuz as a critical artery for global trade, energy supplies, and maritime security, warning of serious economic and security implications at both regional and international levels.
Delegates also commended UN Security Council Resolution 2817, introduced under the leadership of the Kingdom of Bahrain, which received significant international backing. They emphasized the need to strengthen global coordination and cooperation to address emerging challenges and ensure the uninterrupted flow of international trade in line with international law and norms.
At the conclusion of the meeting, participants called for sustained consultations among concerned nations and the identification of practical measures to reinforce a unified international response that supports regional stability and safeguards global economic interests.
The meeting was also attended by Shaikha Alanood bint Ebrahim Al Khalifa, Acting Chief of the European Affairs Sector at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
