Muharraq’s historic city development project is expected to be completed in its first phase by the end of 2026, with 300 Bahraini families set to benefit, Housing and Urban Planning Minister Amna Al Rumaihi has told Parliament.

In a written reply to a question from MP Hamad Al Doy, Al Rumaihi said construction of the project’s new prototype homes had reached 92 per cent.

Restoration of existing homes was more than 60 per cent complete, she said, while work on the visitor centre had reached 82 per cent.

She said the first phase includes 300 homes alongside the restoration of 16 heritage buildings along the Pearling Path.

Character

The buildings will be reused for tourism and cultural purposes as part of efforts to preserve the city’s architectural character.

A second phase is expected to increase the total number of homes to about 2,000 through a partnership with the private sector.

The wider scheme also covers 48 kilometres of walking and mobility routes, together with new parking spaces.

Plans include 72 green spaces with a combined area of 12,000 square metres and the planting of about 100,000 trees.

Upgrades

Five key streets will also undergo upgrades, including infrastructure works, façades and public seating and fixtures, she said.

The construction and restoration of the 300 homes in the first phase have been divided into three batches, with the first expected to be handed over in the first half of 2026.

All three are due to be completed by the end of that year through phased construction.
