Sha’ban was once Bahrain’s gateway to Ramadan, a month where generosity defined the season. Dates are among the most traditional foods associated with fasting during Sha’ban and Ramadan, holding a special place on iftar tables across Arab households.

Muslims traditionally break their fast with dates, following the practice of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), which carries great spiritual reward. This is why dates are commonly distributed as part of Iftar charity projects. Modern studies confirm that dates are ideal for Iftar, as their natural sugars glucose and fructose are easily absorbed, helping to moderately raise blood sugar after long hours of fasting, quickly restore energy, and replenish what the body has lost during the day without causing a sudden spike.

Though this year’s market presents notable changes. Sayed Faisal, a long-time date seller, recalls that over eight years ago, demand surged as early as Sha’ban, with few traders, strong sales, and high-quality produce. “Competition was minimal. There was cooperation among sellers, and people were focused on gaining reward through initiatives such as Iftar for the fasting,” he said to TDT.

“Khenizi and Marzban dates were once the most popular in Bahrain. After the opening of the King Fahd Causeway, Hassawi dates gained popularity, while Marzban gradually disappeared. Later, Al Qassim dates entered the market, winning favor for their yellow color, taste, and improved sorting,” he added.

Dates are more than just food; they are a cultural, nutritional, and spiritual staple during Ramadan. Their variety, health benefits, and religious significance make them a constant presence on iftar tables. As Ramadan approaches, dates embody tradition, energy, hospitality, and the Sunnah of the Prophet, offering both taste and spiritual reward for all who enjoy them.
