Prosecutors have ordered the detention of five suspects as part of an investigation into the possession and sale of expired food products after their expiry dates were altered.
The Public Prosecutor and Deputy Head of the Prosecution for Ministries and Public Bodies said the suspects were accused of storing, modifying and marketing expired goods after tampering with their original expiration dates.
Two commercial premises and a residential property used to store the products have also been placed under seizure.
Report
The case began after police in the capital received a report from an Asian national who said his roommate was keeping expired food products at their shared residence and changing the dates before preparing them for sale in local markets.
Investigators raided the apartment and one of the suspect’s commercial outlets, where they found spoiled and expired food items. Authorities said the original expiry dates had been removed and replaced with false labels.
Repackaged goods bearing the names of foreign companies with no connection to the products were also seized.
Further investigations led to the arrest of additional suspects involved in distributing the altered goods.
One was found to be working at a cleaning products distribution company, where more expired and spoiled items were discovered.
Custody Prosecutors said the five suspects have been questioned and remanded in custody pending further investigations.
Officials from the Ministry of Industry and Commerce have been tasked with inspecting the seized items and tracking similar products in the market.
The suspects are expected to be referred to criminal court once inquiries are completed.
