Bahrain Condemns Reported Attack on Putin Home
Bahrain has condemned the reported attempt to target the residence of Russian President Vladimir Putin, as Moscow and Kyiv exchanged accusations over an overnight drone attack that has raised doubts about the future of ongoing diplomatic negotiations.
In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the Kingdom strongly condemns the attempt to target the residence of the President of the Russian Federation. Bahrain affirmed its solidarity with President Vladimir Putin and with the government and people of Russia, reiterating its categorical rejection of all forms of violence and terrorism that undermine security, stability and peace.
Moscow accused Kyiv on Monday of launching a drone attack during the night on President Putin’s official residence in the Novgorod region, located between Moscow and Saint Petersburg. Russian authorities described the incident as a “terrorist attack” and said it could lead to a review of Russia’s position in the negotiations aimed at ending the war.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said via Telegram that the “Kyiv regime launched a terrorist attack using 91 drones on the official residence of President Putin in the Novgorod region during the night,” adding that all drones were intercepted. He said the attack occurred during intensive negotiations between Russia and the United States over a possible settlement of the conflict, warning that it “will not remain without a response”.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky rejected the accusations, describing them as a “lie”. He said the claims were intended to pave the way for new attacks on Kyiv and to undermine diplomatic efforts between Ukraine and the United States, a day after his meeting with US President Donald Trump at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida.
Trump later told journalists at Mar-a-Lago that President Putin had informed him of the alleged attack early in the morning and was “angry” about it. Trump said the timing was inappropriate, stressing that “the time is not right” for such actions and distinguishing between responding to an attack and targeting a leader’s residence.
The exchange of accusations has cast doubt over the trajectory of diplomatic talks that have been underway since November, as tensions surrounding the reported incident continue to escalate.
