Historic Muharraq City Launches Major Development to Preserve Heritage

A major development project in Muharraq City has officially begun, marking a key step in preserving the area’s historical identity while enhancing residents’ quality of life. The project, which has already shown significant progress, aligns with Bahrain’s cultural and developmental goals.

Members of Bahrain’s National and Municipal Councils emphasized the importance of this national initiative, noting that it reflects the directives of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa and the continued support of His Royal Highness Crown Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa. The project aims to safeguard the historical and cultural identity of Bahraini buildings and cities, while revitalizing Muharraq as a vibrant urban center.

The first phase of the project includes preparing 239 acquired properties, constructing and renovating 300 residential units, and developing 63 streets and alleyways. Additionally, over 360 parking spaces will be added, with unified lighting, landscaping, and commercial signage, reflecting traditional Bahraini architectural identity.

Parliament member Hamad Farooq Al-Dowai highlighted that the construction of these 300 units will preserve Muharraq’s historic character, support traditional markets and crafts, and promote the arts and commerce for which the city has long been known. He praised the coordinated efforts across government institutions to ensure the project meets high standards of quality and transparency.

Fellow parliament member Hisham Al-Awadi added that Muharraq embodies a rich cultural and historical legacy, and the development project supports sustainable growth while restoring the city’s authentic spirit. The plan includes modern infrastructure to balance the population and meet residents’ needs without compromising the city’s heritage.

Abdulwahed Qarata, another council member, described the project as a “significant milestone” in Muharraq’s urban and social development. He stressed that it demonstrates the Kingdom’s commitment to improving living standards, providing adequate housing, and preserving the city’s historical identity.

From the municipal side, Abdulaziz Al-Naar, Chairman of the Muharraq Municipal Council, expressed gratitude to the King and Crown Prince for their guidance and support. He noted that the project reflects a clear commitment to residents’ welfare and to combining heritage preservation with modern urban development.

Council member Dalal Al-Muqhawi emphasized that the initiative includes reviving Isa Al-Kabeer Palace, developing new housing units, improving infrastructure, and preserving historic landmarks, forming a comprehensive national project for the city. Abdulqader Al-Sayyid added that the initiative addresses citizens’ housing needs and enhances services, with the council closely monitoring progress to ensure timely and high-quality execution.

Muhammad Youssef Al-Mahmood highlighted the historical significance of the project, noting the strong response from residents who welcomed the announcement. He said the plan goes beyond housing, including urban renewal, infrastructure upgrades, and modern facilities, striking a balance between heritage preservation and contemporary urban development.

The development of Muharraq City represents a clear step toward sustainable urban growth, improved living conditions, and the protection of Bahrain’s cultural heritage, ensuring that the city remains a symbol of national pride for generations to come.
