Bahrain’s Updated Traffic Law Goes Live at Midnight

TDT| Manama Bahrain’s amended Traffic Law came into force at 00:00 a.m. today, Friday, August 22nd, according to the General Directorate of Traffic, bringing a comprehensive schedule of fines, jail terms, and, in defined cases, the confiscation of vehicles.
Confiscation Power
Courts may order the confiscation of a vehicle in cases of unsafe or reckless driving, wrong-way driving, racing or performing stunts on public roads, accidents resulting in bodily injury or death, and engaging in any public transport activity without a license.
DUI Accidents
Driving under the influence that results in an accident due to speeding, overtaking through continuous yellow lines, wrongway driving, or running a red light carries imprisonment not less than two years and not exceeding seven years when causing bodily injury, and not less than three years and not exceeding ten years when causing death. Settlement is not permissible in such cases.
Accidents Without DUI
When an accident from speeding, yellow-line overtaking, wrong-way driving, or running a red light causes bodily injury, penalties are a fine between BHD 1,000 and BHD 5,000, or imprisonment for a period not less than one year. If it causes death, penalties are a fine between BHD 2,000 and BHD 6,000, or imprisonment for a period not less than two years and not exceeding five years. Settlement is not permissible in such cases.
Speeding Rules
Exceeding the speed limit by not more than 30 percent carries a fine between BHD 50 and BHD 250 or imprisonment for a period not exceeding three months. Exceeding by more than 30 percent carries a fine between BHD 200 and BHD 1,000 or imprisonment for a period not less than one month and not exceeding six months. If speeding causes damage to public or private property, penalties are a fine between BHD 1,000 and BHD 3,000 or imprisonment for a period not less than three months and not exceeding one year.
Red Light
Running a red traffic light carries a fine between BHD 200 and BHD 1,000 or imprisonment for a period not exceeding six months. If it causes damage to public or private property, penalties are a fine between BHD 1,000 and BHD 3,000 or imprisonment for a period not less than three months.
Plates, Transport
Driving without registration plates, altering or defacing plates, transferring plates without approval, or allowing the use of defaced or altered plates carries a fine between BHD 300 and BHD 500 or imprisonment for a period not less than one month and not exceeding six months. Public transport offences, including operating without a license, meter violations, and technical or safety breaches, carry a fine between BHD 200 and BHD 1,000 or imprisonment for a period not exceeding six months.
General Offences
Allowing an unlicensed person to drive, racing on a public road, using a vehicle for a purpose other than specified in its license, handheld phone use while driving, failure to comply with signals, signs or authority instructions, loading violations, intentionally obstructing traffic, or driving without the correct, valid license carries a fine between BHD 100 and BHD 500 or imprisonment for a period not exceeding six months.
