The High Criminal Court of Appeal on Sunday heard testimony from the head and a member of the medical committee that examined the appellant, convicted of murdering his neighbor in Al-Shakhoura. The experts confirmed that the defendant was fully aware of his actions at the time of the crime and therefore bears criminal responsibility.
During the session, the Public Prosecutor called on the court to reject the appeal and uphold the death sentence previously issued by the First High Criminal Court. The panel explained that, despite an old diagnosis of mood disorder, the defendant had deliberately planned the killing, prepared the murder weapon, concealed it in his clothing, worn gloves, and later disposed of the knife — all of which proved his intent and awareness.
The defendant, who appeared remorseful at the end of the hearing, admitted he had not attempted to hide the weapon after the incident. However, prosecutors stressed that his detailed planning and execution showed he acted with free will, unaffected by his mental condition.
Defense counsel requested the court to hear additional witnesses, including the appellant’s treating psychiatrist, before final arguments scheduled for September 1.
The case dates back to a gruesome incident in which the victim was found dead near his home in Al-Shakhoura with multiple stab wounds. Investigations, supported by forensic evidence and security camera footage, identified the perpetrator as the victim’s neighbor and relative. He later confessed, stating he had resolved to kill the victim following previous disputes, and ambushed him outside his residence armed with a knife.
The First High Criminal Court had earlier convicted the man of premeditated murder and sentenced him to death by unanimous decision, citing his confession, coherent testimony during investigations, and the clear evidence of intent and deliberation.
