One Dead, 10 Injured in Car Ramming in France

Caen: One person killed and ten others were injured after a man purposefully crashed a car into a crowd of pedestrians close to the train station in Caen, Normandy, late on Wednesday night, according to authorities.

The incident reportedly followed an argument close to a pub and occurred at approximately 10:15 p.m. local time. The car then hit civilians gathered on the street across from the train station, according to the authorities. Three of the injured had less severe injuries, while seven remain in critical condition.

The 26 years old Russian-born motorist ran away from the incident but was arrested in Ouistreham, which is roughly 20 km away. According to officials, he was previously unknown to intelligence agencies and only known to the police for traffic violations.

Police have opened an investigation into murder and aggravated assault. Although the inquiry is still in its initial stages and the exact motivation is yet unknown, authorities believe there is presently no evidence of a terrorist motive.

According to reports, all of the victims were male and ranged in age from 17 to over 40. Police and firefighters participated in a massive emergency reaction that was sent to the location.
