A verdict is due on 8 July in the case of a man accused of stabbing his neighbour to death in Shakhura.

Arguments concluded yesterday at the First High Criminal Court, where the defendant, given the last word, told judges: “I am 46 years old. I am not a criminal. I did nothing.”

His lawyer again asked for him to be examined by medical experts, or for the court to question the committee behind the forensic report.

The prosecution stood its ground and called for the harshest penalty permitted by law.

The case began when police in the Northern Governorate reported the discovery of a body near a house in Shakhura.

The man had been stabbed several times.

Evidence

Prosecutors, along with a forensic doctor and crime scene specialists, inspected the site, examined the body and gathered evidence.

Investigators say the accused, a relative and a neighbour of the victim, lay in wait and attacked him with a knife as he stepped out of his home.

Surveillance footage and witness accounts were cited in support of the claim.

During questioning, the man confessed. He told prosecutors he had made up his mind to kill his neighbour after a string of earlier rows.
