• Tougher laws to target deadly driving
• HRH directs Interior Ministry
• Zero tolerance approach signalled

Bahrain has signalled a tougher stance on dangerous driving, with His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, directing authorities to strengthen legal penalties for traffic violations that lead to serious injury or death.

The directive, issued yesterday, mandates the Ministry of Interior to draft new legislation aimed at curbing reckless behaviour on the roads.

The move reflects a growing commitment by the government to tackle what it views as a persistent threat to public safety and social well-being.

Road safety priority

In a statement, HRH the Crown Prince and Prime Minister stressed that traffic safety is not merely a regulatory issue but a pillar of national security.

His Royal Highness underscored the vital importance of traffic safety as a cornerstone of societal security and well-being, stressing the need to intensify efforts to ensure a safe and sustainable traffic environment for all road users.

The proposed laws are expected to tighten consequences for high-risk behaviours such as speeding, reckless overtaking, and driving under the influence.

The initiative forms part of a broader effort to modernise Bahrain’s traffic legislation and foster a culture of compliance among road users.

Officials say the ultimate goal is to reduce preventable deaths and serious injuries, particularly those involving vulnerable road users such as pedestrians and cyclists.

Zero tolerance message

By targeting accidents that result in fatalities or major injuries, the proposed measures send a clear message of zero tolerance toward life-threatening negligence behind the wheel.

It also reinforces Bahrain’s intention to align its safety standards with global best practices while adapting them to local conditions.

The new traffic safety push reflects Bahrain’s growing emphasis on preventive governance and community-centred public policy.
