A proposal to make artificial intelligence handle the drudge work in government was submitted to Parliament yesterday, with MP Hassan Ebrahim arguing that automation would cut bureaucracy, sharpen efficiency, and tighten oversight.

“We’re still bogged down by slow, repetitive tasks when AI could take them off our hands in seconds,” Ebrahim said. “Instead of wasting time on paperwork, people should be making the real decisions while AI handles the admin slog.”

He pointed out that other countries are already using AI to crunch vast amounts of data, detect patterns, and fine-tune decisions.

Smarter

“If we want a government that runs smarter, AI needs to be embedded across ministries, especially in public services,” he said.

Ebrahim also stressed AI’s role in financial oversight.

“AI can scan transactions, flag dodgy spending, and catch mismanagement before it spirals,” he said. “Automating audits would close loopholes and make sure every dinar is accounted for.”

Watchdog

He sees AI as a watchdog, too. “It can sift through complaints, catch problems early, and generate clear reports on what needs fixing,” he said.

Beyond admin, Ebrahim pointed to AI’s growing role in security and city management.

Technology

“From smart cameras that detect threats to AI-driven traffic systems like those in Saudi Arabia, this technology is already improving safety and easing congestion elsewhere. Bahrain needs to catch up.”

But he warned that bringing in AI isn’t enough. “Without proper training, investment in local expertise, we won’t get the full benefit,” he said.
