Lawmakers back revival of fishing subsidies

MPs have urged the government to reinstate financial support for fishermen, a move that has cleared Parliament and could allow for equipment subsidies and job funding through the Labour Fund (Tamkeen).

The push comes as fishermen face rising costs and new regulations that MPs argue are adding to their burdens.

Scheme

The proposal, backed in yesterday’s session, seeks to restore a scheme that once helped cover running expenses and gear upgrades, easing pressure on those struggling to keep their businesses afloat.

MP Hanan Fardan, who put forward the motion with four others, said past support had been a lifeline.

“That funding gave fishermen room to breathe when costs were climbing. Bringing it back would mean they can afford to comply with regulations, replace ageing equipment, and keep jobs in local hands,” she said.

Funding

The proposal calls for Tamkeen to restart targeted funding, helping fishermen meet regulatory requirements, invest in better gear, and hire young Bahrainis.

MPs warned that without this backing, the industry could suffer, affecting those who depend on it and the country’s seafood supply.

The government has yet to respond to the request, but MPs argue that without support, many fishermen may struggle to continue operating.
