Expat’s parents trapped in Chennai flood rescued

A Bahrain resident's parents, who were trapped in an apartment following the heavy flood in Chennai, have been saved by the military, it has been learnt.

The parents of Chandran were saved in a recent rescue operation, according to a community leader and Tamil Social and Cultural Association President Ratna Raj.

He noted that no other similar cases were reported.

"We had a large meeting involving community leaders, members and well-wishers. Families of residents of Bahrain were reported safe. We are constantly in touch with the members of the community, so if there are any cases we will come to know quickly," he said.

Speaking to DT News, Chandran's employer Sadasivam Raju confirmed the incident.

"Yes, they were trapped in the apartment and had to be rescued. They are in a safe place since being rescued," he said.

The situation in Chennai is improving as residents find respite thanks to receding water levels. Indian Army, Navy and Air Force were deployed for rescue efforts and to help the distressed residents.

Relief efforts planned

A special committee has been formed by the Tamil community to help the flood victims.

Raj said that the seven-member committee from Tamil Social and Cultural Association would coordinate with charities, Bahrain government and residents to find the best way to help.

"Currently, donations are made by individuals directly to the victims or to charities in India but there are no fundraising done by our organisation. As a cultural society we are not permitted to raise funds so we are checking with the authorities on what we can do in this situation. We will have to wait until we get a reply from the ministry. We are also exploring other ways in which we can help. We are encouraging the public to send their donations to charities in Chennai who are helping the victims," he said.
