Brisbane: Work on the main stadium for the 2032 Summer Olympics began formally on Monday in Brisbane, after authorities removed protesters from the proposed building site at Victoria Park, putting an end to weeks of Indigenous and environmental activist demonstrations.

The Queensland government took control of the site around midnight, built security fencing, and sent excavation equipment into the park to begin preliminary earthworks for the planned 63,000-seat stadium, which is predicted to cost over A$3.6 billion (US$2.6 billion). The venue is expected to host sports events, as well as the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2032 Games.

The project has provoked heated opposition from Indigenous organisations and environmentalists, who claim that the heritage-listed park, known to traditional owners as Barrambin, has cultural and spiritual importance and should be safeguarded from exploitation. Protest camps had seized areas of the site for more than two months before authorities demolished them last week, resulting in multiple arrests.

Queensland Premier David Crisafulli defended the initiative, stating that the government was moving forward with its Olympic infrastructure plan following years of debate. Despite the fact that work has begun, protest organisations have pledged to continue their legal and public battles against the stadium.

The new stadium is a vital part of Brisbane's Olympic master plan, and it is planned to replace the ageing Gabba as the city's primary site for big sporting events after the Games.
