New rules for people seeking to sell gold in Qatar

Doha : The Ministry of Interior has announced conditions for people wanting to sell gold in the local market.

In addition to the existing mandatory no-objection certificate (NoC) from police,  the ministry has issued new criteria for selling gold or jewellery. Only men and women aged 18 or above will be given the NoC. It can be obtained from the ‘gold sale NoC bureau’ at any of the Public Security departments or Souq Waqif. A fee of QR10 is to be paid to acquire the NoC but the payment has to be made through a bank card.

It is also mandatory for a seller to bring along and show the bureau the gold jewellery, or pure gold or watch, or items of gold, including bars, among others meant to be sold, the ministry announced on its Facebook account. A purchase bill, if available, must be submitted to the bureau. Citizens and residents must produce their identity (ID) card while it is a must for visitors to show their passports.

Men or women can sell gold owned by them as well as on behalf of their close relatives, including wife, sister, mother, grandmother, father’s sister or mother’s sister. They must produce their ID cards and those of the actual owners. 

People can also depute their “representatives” to sell gold and in that case their IDs and those of the representatives need to be produced along with purchase bills, if available. 

The ministry said the measures aim to safeguard people’s personal properties.
