US blocks imports of new Chinese humanoid robots

Washington: The Trump administration has imposed a ban on the import of new Chinese-made humanoid and quadruped robots, alleging national security and cybersecurity concerns. The limits, imposed by the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC), also apply to connected power inverters used in renewable energy systems and data centres.
The FCC stated that the measure is intended to protect the U.S. artificial intelligence supply chain from potential cyberattacks, data theft, and supply chain disruptions, while also encouraging local production of vital technology. The restriction only applies to new product models, but the FCC retains the right to withdraw certifications for existing devices as needed.
The ruling is expected to have an impact on major Chinese robotics companies, notably Unitree, a global leader in humanoid robot manufacturing. Beijing criticised the move, accusing Washington of unfairly targeting Chinese enterprises and warning that it will take the necessary steps to protect its interests.
