London: Josh Kerr, the British middle-distance runner, broke the 27-year-old men's mile world record at the London Diamond League, clocking 3 minutes 42.66 seconds. He surpassed the previous record of 3:43.13, set by Moroccan legend Hicham El Guerrouj in 1999.

Kerr ran a blistering last lap to become the first athlete in nearly three decades to break one of the sport's most legendary records. The ultimate achievement also represented the complete accomplishment of his long-planned ‘Project 222’ challenge, which intended to run the mile in under 223 seconds.

Breaking the record had been a long-held aspiration for the Olympic silver medallist, who acknowledged his coaches, colleagues, and family with assisting him in reaching the goal. His performance also established his status as one of the world's top middle-distance runners heading into the 2015 World Athletics Championships.
