New Delhi: Sonam Wangchuk, 59, a climate activist and education reformer, admitted to VMMC and Safdarjung Hospital on Saturday after completing 20 days of an indefinite hunger strike at Delhi's Jantar Mantar. He had been fasting since June 28 to demand the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan due to suspected irregularities in national competitive examinations.
Wangchuk was taken to the hospital on medical advice and a Delhi High Court order after his health worsened as a result of the lengthy fast. Doctors had been closely monitoring him as concerns intensified about the effects of the hunger strike.
Abhijeet Dipke, the founding president of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), took over the indefinite hunger strike despite his hospitalisation, declaring that the strike would not end until the group's demands for accountability and examination system reforms were met.
Wangchuk asked supporters to peacefully carry with their planned march to Parliament before being admitted to the hospital, emphasising that the campaign's goals are to guarantee transparency and rebuild public trust in India's educational system.
