Beijing: Chinese users of AI-powered companion bots have said their final goodbyes to their virtual companions after new national restrictions went into effect on July 15. The guidelines are meant to decrease the likelihood that people may become emotionally dependent on AI-powered digital companions.

The new restrictions compel AI companion platforms to remove characteristics that promote strong emotional attachment, particularly among children and fragile users. Developers must also guarantee that their chatbots do not manipulate users' emotions or discourage in-person connections.

The move sparked an outpouring of emotion online, with many users sending farewell messages to their AI partners. One person stated, ‘Thank you for being with me throughout my saddest days. I hope we can meet again someday.’ Another person stated, ‘You listened without judging me. Saying farewell feels like losing a true friend.’ Others were disappointed, claiming that the bots had brought solace during times of loneliness, anxiety, and stress when they had no one else to turn to.

The emotional responses have sparked debate in China about the increasing role of artificial intelligence in people's personal lives. While authorities say the regulations are required to safeguard users from unhealthy dependency, other users argue the restrictions ignore the beneficial emotional support that AI companions may bring.
