Washington DC: President Donald Trump welcomed new Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi to the White House on Tuesday, praising him as a ‘champion’ amidst U.S. pressure to limit Iranian influence.

With the U.S.-led anti-jihadist mission set to conclude on September 30, Zaidi made a firm security commitment. He promised that after this date, his government will not allow any armed groups to operate outside state control.

Trump signaled a push for major energy cooperation. The President hinted at future oil agreements to boost production and job creation, noting the ‘tremendous chemistry’ shared between the two leaders.

While forging a closer partnership with Washington, Iraq remains in a delicate position. The nation must navigate complex geopolitical tensions, balancing its new U.S. alignment against its historical relationship with neighboring Iran.

This visit marks Zaidi's first international trip since taking office, signaling his intent to address Iraq's infrastructure and economic challenges through renewed cooperation with the United States.
