TORONTO: Police have confirmed that the two fatal victims of Saturday’s Toronto festival shooting were specifically targeted, effectively ruling out the possibility that they were random bystanders.
The violence occurred Saturday night at a music festival, sending thousands of attendees into a chaotic scramble for safety. Two men, aged 25 and 20, lost their lives in the attack; authorities noted that the two victims knew each other personally.
Additionally, four other individuals were injured during the incident, though their identities remain unconfirmed.
Toronto Police Chief Myron Demkiw stated the investigation is currently ongoing, though he declined to comment on potential suspects.
By confirming the targeted nature of the attack, officials have provided clarity, shifting focus away from the fear of random violence that initially gripped the festival crowd.
In the aftermath, Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow condemned the incident as ‘disgusting’ and pressed the government to stem the flow of illegal American guns into the city. Chief Demkiw noted that 85 to 90 percent of traced crime guns originate in the United States, although Canadian officials continue to defend their strict domestic gun laws and border controls.
