Yangon, Myanmar: A Myanmar military airstrike on a monastery where civilians gathered for a meditation retreat killed 14 people on Friday in the Sagaing region.
The attack struck a hall around 9:00 am in Myaung township, killing 11 men and three women aged between 50 and 70. The victims had entered the centre for a three-month retreat marking Buddhist Lent. Local rebel witnesses reported that military aircraft launched a second bombing run while teams attempted to rescue survivors and retrieve bodies.
The strike follows a United Nations report accusing the military of intentional, indiscriminate aerial attacks against civilians and public buildings. The government called those findings unverifiable allegations.
Myanmar has been consumed by civil war since the military ousted Aung San Suu Kyi's elected government in a 2021 coup. Over 100,000 people are estimated to have died in the conflict.
