South Korea Sends First Container Ship Through Arctic Route

Seoul: South Korea flagged off its first trial container vessel through the Arctic to Europe on Saturday as global shipping face severe disruptions from the ongoing Middle East war.

The vessel PanStar Acro departed Busan New Port for a 45-day round trip to Britain, the Netherlands, and Poland. Navigating along Russia's Arctic coast via the Northern Sea Route, the passage tests whether melting polar sea ice provides a commercially viable alternative to traditional maritime corridors.

Sailing through the Arctic reduces the Asia-to-Europe journey by roughly 7,000 kilometres and 10 days compared to the standard route via the Suez Canal.

South Korean officials described the northern corridor as an increasingly necessary backup to Middle Eastern shipping lanes amid heightened geopolitical instability and advancing technology.

However, the initiative faces diplomatic and environmental scrutiny. Experts cautioned that utilizing Russian navigation and weather services could risk breaching Western sanctions against Moscow.

Additionally, environmental groups warned that commercializing northern sea routes accelerates polar ice melt, undermining global efforts to combat climate change.

Despite these concerns, Seoul's trial reflects growing regional interest in alternative shipping corridors, following similar Arctic transit deployments by Chinese carriers earlier this month.
