Washington DC: The failure to strike a deal triggered new 50-percent duties on approximately $20 billion worth of Canadian exports. Affected goods range from steel and timber to everyday consumer items like hockey sticks and cement.

In response, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney pledged that Canada will match the US duties dollar for dollar to protect domestic workers and businesses.

Canadian officials rejected the proposed agreement after Washington introduced last-minute terms deemed unfair and uneconomic.

US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer stated that Washington had offered tariff relief on steel, aluminium, autos, and lumber in exchange for Canada lifting its own retaliatory trade barriers.

However, senior US officials confirmed that no further negotiation sessions are currently scheduled.

The escalation highlights a growing rift in bilateral relations. Prime Minister Carney reiterated that Canada must diversify its trade strategy to reduce its economic reliance on the United States. (
