BERLIN: An American humanitarian worker arrived in Frankfurt, Germany, Monday for treatment of Ebola. The patient was transferred to the city's university hospital after being infected in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

The worker had been stationed in Bunia, the capital of Ituri province, which serves as the epicenter for the ongoing outbreak. The World Health Organization (WHO) provided initial clinical care before arranging the safe transfer.

The DRC's current Ebola pandemic, declared in mid-May, involves the Bundibugyo strain, for which there is no vaccine or cure. The WHO reports over 1,900 confirmed cases and 700 deaths linked to the virus.

German health authorities emphasized the patient poses no risk to the general public. US authorities requested German assistance due to the nation's medical expertise and the efficient flight path from the DRC.

This transfer follows the successful recovery of another American citizen treated for the virus at Berlin’s Charite Hospital earlier this May.
