Madrid: Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez called for stronger wildfire prevention measures following a devastating wildfire that killed two people and destroyed large areas of forest, emphasising the growing threat of extreme weather caused by climate change.

Following the disaster, Sánchez stressed the importance of strengthening forest management, expanding early warning systems, and improving emergency response skills in order to prevent the danger of future disasters. He also conveyed condolences to the victims' families and recognised firefighters, military forces, and emergency crews for their efforts to put out the fire under tough circumstances.

Authorities reported that the wildfire caused evacuations in impacted areas and damaged significant areas of woodland, as firefighters worked to bring the flames under control. Officials have initiated an inquiry into the cause of the fire and are determining the extent of the damage. Spain has had increasingly catastrophic wildfire seasons in recent years, as extended heatwaves and dryness have created circumstances conducive to rapid spread of fires.
