Myanmar Foreign Minister to Join ASEAN Counterparts for Bangkok Talks

Hanoi: Myanmar's foreign minister is set to meet his regional ASEAN counterparts in Bangkok this Sunday as the pariah state attempts to rejoin the diplomatic fold.
Vietnam's foreign ministry officially confirmed the upcoming talks on Thursday, marking a significant shift since Myanmar was largely frozen out following the turbulent 2021 military coup.
The informal attendance of Foreign Minister Tin Maung Swe represents a notable crack in ASEAN's previously strict, principled stance against the junta. This diplomatic push follows military chief Min Aung Hlaing installing himself as civilian president in April after highly restricted elections.
According to Vietnam ministry spokeswoman Pham Thu Hang, the Bangkok gathering will feature two distinct rounds of talks, including direct exchanges with Myanmar to promote reconciliation. An anonymous regional diplomatic source also confirmed to AFP that the minister will attend the meetings in person.
Analysts view this strategic choreography as a direct step toward getting Myanmar’s leader into November's major ASEAN summit in Manila, though the host nation Philippines, ultimately holds the absolute final official invitation decision.
