Caracas: Venezuela's interim President, Delcy Rodriguez, has urged King Charles III to release around 31 tonnes of Venezuelan gold held at the Bank of England, noting that the frozen assets are urgently required to support reconstruction following last month's deadly earthquakes.

Rodriguez told state television that she had written an official letter to the British monarch, saying that the gold belonged to the Venezuelan people and should be used to repair homes, restore infrastructure, and help those afflicted by the disaster. According to official numbers, the twin earthquakes killed over 3,800 people, injured thousands, and displaced approximately 18,000.

Due to a lengthy legal issue involving international sanctions and concerns about Venezuela's political leadership, the gold has been frozen at the Bank of England for years. Rodriguez also reiterated requests for more extensive sanctions relief, claiming that the nation has enough foreign assets to bankroll its recovery if those funds are released.
