Hamas Gives Up Gaza Governance, but Ceasefire Hurdles Remain

Gaza City : Hamas has dissolved the body that has governed Gaza's civil affairs since 2007, signalling its willingness to hand over day-to-day administration, but analysts say the move is unlikely to revive the stalled ceasefire process on its own.

The group said it will transfer civil responsibilities to the National Committee for the Administration of Gaza, a technocrat-led body created to oversee the territory during a transition period. Hamas officials said preparations for the transfer are already underway.

Experts believe the decision is aimed at demonstrating support for the ceasefire process and countering accusations that Hamas is blocking efforts to end the war. The group has also accused Israel of failing to meet ceasefire commitments, including allowing enough humanitarian aid into Gaza, a claim Israel denies.

However, analysts say the biggest obstacle remains Hamas' military wing. Israel insists the war can end only if Hamas disarms and Gaza is fully demilitarised, while Hamas says it will not surrender its weapons until a Palestinian governing authority is established and Israeli forces begin withdrawing from the territory.
