UNHCR warns Lake Chad Basin at tipping point as violence and displacement surge

Geneva: The United Nations has reported that more than 3.5 million people are now forcibly displaced and 8.2 million need urgent humanitarian assistance across Africa's conflict-torn Lake Chad basin.
The UN refugee agency voiced severe alarm over escalating regional violence, noting that recent security deteriorations have claimed over 5,700 lives. Between September 2025 and May 2026, the basin suffered nearly 1,800 security incidents, including civilian killings, kidnappings, explosions, and village raids executed by jihadist groups.
Borno State in northeast Nigeria remains the crisis epicenter, driving thousands of individuals to flee across borders into neighboring Niger, Chad, and Cameroon. This persistent instability leaves displaced populations deeply exposed, with roughly half of the children in the worst-hit areas forced out of school.
To address the surge in displacement and protect vulnerable civilians, UNHCR requires $29 million in immediate funding. Officials warn that without these resources, the conflict will spread further across borders, deeply entrenching the regional crisis.
