Bangkok: Eight Thai monks have been killed and more than 20 others injured after an 11-year-old boy drove his parents' pickup truck directly into a roadside Buddhist pilgrimage procession.
The catastrophic crash occurred in northeastern Mukdahan province while a group of 35 monks and five lay followers were walking along a highway. The vehicle struck the line at full speed, throwing victims into the air, killing five instantly at the scene and three later in the hospital.
Local police confirmed the underage suspect had taken the vehicle without permission before losing complete control. The pickup truck has been impounded for forensic testing to establish the exact cause of the accident.
Authorities have summoned the child's parents to determine caretaking liability and proceed with the legal process. Meanwhile, four injured monks remain in critical condition as officials issue urgent warnings regarding parental oversight.
